Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA, XETRA:NVD), the American chipmaker, is reportedly considering an acquisition of Reflection AI or a further investment in the startup as it expands its involvement in open-weight artificial intelligence models.

The discussions remain at an early stage, with no terms agreed upon, and could still fall apart, although an agreement could emerge within weeks, Reuters reported, citing the Financial Times.

Options under consideration include a full acquisition, an acqui-hire arrangement under which Nvidia would hire Reflection's employees and license its technology, or an agreement to supply additional chips or increase its existing equity stake.

Nvidia has already invested $800 million in Reflection, a company founded in 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou.

Laskin, Reflection's chief executive, was seeking new investment at a valuation of $25 billion before additional funding in April, indicating the possible scale of a transaction.

The startup develops artificial intelligence tools for software development and is targeting enterprise customers and governments seeking to build customised AI systems.

Reflection launched Beam, its first open-weight AI model, on 5 October, aiming to compete with Chinese models in coding, advanced reasoning and agentic tasks, which involve AI systems carrying out multistep activities.

Open-weight models make their trained parameters available to external developers, allowing them to adapt and deploy the technology rather than relying entirely on closed systems controlled by model providers.

Reflection says Beam performs comparably to Z.AI's GLM-5.2 on advanced reasoning benchmarks, positioning the company to challenge lower-cost Chinese alternatives.

A transaction would reinforce Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang's support for open-weight models and extend the chipmaker's investment in the artificial intelligence ecosystem, where demand for computing power remains central to model development and deployment.

Nvidia and Reflection did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the reported discussions, Reuters reported.
