Amazon is in negotiations to buy AI startup Decart in a transaction that could be worth approximately $7 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal. The Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, said a transaction could be finalized in the near term, barring a breakdown in negotiations or the appearance of a competing buyer.

Decart, headquartered in San Francisco, has built software that allows developers to move fluidly across different AI chips — an increasingly valuable capability as demand for computing resources intensifies among competing companies, according to the Journal. The company is also developing world models called Lucy and Oasis, which can generate and simulate real-world 3-D environments.

Decart was founded in 2023 by brothers Dean and Orian Leitersdorf and Moshe Shalev, three Israeli engineers. The startup's backers include Sequoia Capital, Benchmark, and Radical Ventures, who together have helped it raise upward of $400 million in venture funding, according to the Journal. Its most recent valuation stood at nearly $4 billion, set in May.

Amazon has developed its own custom AI chip, Trainium3, and AWS extended early access to the chip to Decart in 2025 following meetings with the company that impressed Amazon's team, according to the Journal.

Decart had previously been in talks to be sold to Anthropic for roughly $6 billion, a deal that would have been Anthropic's largest acquisition and would have brought Decart's team into Anthropic's inference and performance organization. That deal was not finalized. The company's Lucy model processes live video feeds to produce real-time footage of people wearing clothing or accessories, while its Oasis model creates synthetic environments used in robotics and self-driving technology development. eBay is both an investor in and a customer of the company.

Among Amazon's notable recent acquisitions, according to the Journal, are its $6.5 billion purchase of MGM in 2022 and a deal worth roughly $11 billion for Globalstar that was announced earlier this year. Earlier this month, Israeli news outlet Calcalist had reported that Decart was deep in negotiations to be acquired by a major technology company, the Journal noted.
