R.I.P. Eric Dane: Hollywood Mourns The Loss of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’s “McSteamy”

Hollywood is remembering actor Eric Dane, who passed away on Thursday (Feb. 19) following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He was 53 years old.

Dane, who famously starred on Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Mark Sloan (more commonly referred to as “McSteamy”), was honored with a statement from ABC and 20th Television.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Eric Dane,” the statement reads. “His remarkable talent and unforgettable presence on Grey’s Anatomy left a lasting impact on audiences around the world, and his courage and grace during his battle with ALS inspired so many. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and colleagues, as well as the many fans whose lives were touched by his work.”

According to Deadline, the medical drama is expected to honor Dane next week in its series return next week.

His Grey’s co-star Kim Raver posted in honor of Dane, describing him as “a light.” According to People, Patrick Dempsey, who played “McDreamy” Dr. Derek Shepherd, appeared on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Friday, where he remembered Dane as “the funniest man” who “was such a joy to work with.”

Dane’s Charmed co-star Alyssa Milano paid tribute to the late actor, praising his “razor-sharp sense of humor” and the love he had for his “breathtakingly beautiful family.”

View this post on Instagram Dane, who revealed his ALS diagnosis in April 2025, also shared his plans to continue working, including on Euphoria Season 3 as Cal Jacobs HBO Max issued a statement, writing that they “are deeply saddened by the news of Eric Dane’s passing.”

“He was incredibly talented and HBO was fortunate to have worked with him on three seasons of Euphoria,” the statement continued. “Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”

Series creator Sam Levinson issued a statement to Deadline, lamenting that he is “heartbroken by the loss of our dear friend Eric.”

“Working with him was an honor,” he added. “Being his friend was a gift. Eric’s family is in our prayers. May his memory be for a blessing.”

Another recent credit of Dane’s was on Prime Video’s Countdown. Series star Jensen Ackles shared a photo with Dane on Instagram on Friday, writing, “Rest in peace my brother. I’ll see you down the road. 🙏🏼”

Many actors have since honored the late actor, including his Wedding Wars co-star John Stamos and Ashton Kutcher.
