In The Pitt Season 2 Episode 7 “1 PM,” one such moment reveals that Dr. Trinity Santos (Isa Briones) cares far more for her colleague/roommate Dr. Dennis Whitaker (Gerran Howell) than she wants to let on.

**Spoilers for The Pitt Season 2 Episode 7 “1 PM,” now streaming on HBO Max**

Partway through The Pitt Season 2 Episode 7, Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) catches up with Dr. Santos. She reveals that she’s a bit worried about Whitaker wearing himself thin and being taken advantage of by the people he goes above and beyond for.

“He’s such a fucking Huckleberry,” Santos says, evoking the nickname she gave Whitaker all the way early back in Season 1.

“Yeah,” Dr. Robby says, “but he’s our fucking Huckleberry.”

When The Pitt‘s Gerran Howell visited DECIDER HQ a few weeks back, we asked them what this scene meant to him and he turned around and said, “It’s more like their relationship to me.”

“It is all about the medicine in the show: medicine, medicine, medicine. And the audience kind of very slowly realizes what our relationships are,” Howell said. “You know, especially with me and Santos. People know we’re roommates, but we’re not necessarily kind of giving each other secret handshakes or talking or interacting that much. So it’s moments like that that make you go, ‘Oh, she really cares for him in her own way.'”

Howell also acknowledged that the “lovely moment” definitely evoked a reaction during The Pitt Season 2 Episode 7 table read.

“I remember that in the read-through,” Howell said. “I think there was like a collective, ‘Awww…” in the room.”

“And I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, she has some affection for him, I suppose. She won’t admit it to anyone else, but yeah.”

Earlier in The Pitt Season 2, Whitaker and Javadi (Shabana Azeez) compare the nicknames that Santos gave them in Season 1. Whitaker thinks it’s “cool” that Javadi is called “Crash,” while she accidentally suggests to him that neither of their nicknames is cool. It sends Whitaker spiraling a little, but Gerran Howell has no problem being known as The Pitt‘s “Huckleberry.”

“I think it is kind of a cool nickname. Yeah, I think it is. I think there are so many worse things you could be called than ‘Huckleberry,'” Howell said. “So yeah, I think it’s a cool, cool nickname, I guess.”

“Better than ‘White Chocolate,'” he added, referring to Dr. Yolanda Garcia’s (Alexandra Metz) nickname for him. “I’m still not completely sure what that means, but, yeah, there are definitely worse nicknames for sure.”

(It might be because the very midwestern and white character has been caught grooving to classic R&B and soul.)

When DECIDER pointed out that Santos has yet to get a nickname that stuck, Howell was surprised.

“She hasn’t been given any nicknames?” he said. “Oh, interesting.”

“Yeah, we’ll workshop that. Specifically, me and Shabana will come up with something,” Howell said. “It’d have to be really mean. I don’t know…”
