Tesla (TSLA:NASDAQ) has renamed its "Full Self-Driving (Supervised)" system in Europe. It is now called "Assisted Driving."

The change follows a statement from Germany's Federal Ministry of Transport on Tuesday. The ministry called the "FSD" name "somewhat misleading."

It said the system doesn't take over the entire driving task; it supports things like accelerating, braking, and steering, and the driver must stay attentive at all times.

In the U.S., the package is still sold as Full Self-Driving (Supervised). It costs Tesla owners $99 per month.

Tesla is pushing for approvals across Europe, where EV sales have risen this year as fuel costs jumped because of the war in Iran.

Regulators are watching closely. Reuters reported that Tesla's pressure on European regulators pushed some to ease safety tests and reviews.

In the U.S., the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating how FSD performs in fog and bright sunlight.

It is also checking whether FSD led drivers to commit traffic violations, some of which ended in collisions.

There is a legal issue too. In December 2025, a California judge found that Tesla engaged in deceptive marketing around Autopilot and FSD.

Tesla has countersued the California DMV, and that case is still ongoing.

Missy Cummings, an engineering professor at George Mason University, said a rename is not enough. She believes European agencies are ignoring the U.S. investigations into FSD.

For Tesla stock, this is a branding fix, not a product change. The software is the same, and only the label has changed.

Still, FSD is central to the story. On the Q2 call, Tesla said about 55% of North American deliveries had an FSD subscription enabled at delivery.

Its earnings update showed 1.48 million active FSD subscriptions. Tesla did not say how many came from free trials or other incentives.

Management also called Q2 a record quarter for deliveries and said it exited the quarter with its largest order backlog since 2023.

But there are costs. Automotive margins, excluding regulatory credits, fell from 19.2% to 16.3%. Capital spending is expected to top $25 billion this year, and free cash flow was negative in Q2.

So Tesla stock is balancing strong demand against heavy spending and rising regulatory scrutiny.

Europe could become a bigger FSD market, but investors will want to see approvals come through without more pushback.

How Tesla handles that will shape how the market views Tesla stock from here.
