There are tons of adaptations of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet from the past century-plus of cinema, including a Best Picture winner from 1949. But there’s only been so adaptation so far of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel Hamnet, which is a work of fiction taking its inspiration from Shakespeare’s life.
The playwright’s son Hamnet really did die tragically at 11 years old; O’Farrell’s 2020 novel speculates about the emotional repercussions of that death on Shakespeare (played by Paul Mescal) and his wife, here called Agnes (Jessie Buckley), and how it might have influenced the writing of Shakespeare’s play Hamlet. (As the movie points out upfront, the two similar-sounding names were considered interchangeable in Shakespeare’s time.)
Hamnet was a major player at this year’s Oscars, riding a wave of positive reviews to eight nominations, including nods for Best Picture, Director Chloé Zhao, Best Actress (Buckley), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Casting. Buckley gives a powerhouse performance as a woman wholly uninterested in her husband’s artistic calling, and whose marriage is tested by this wrenching tragedy. While it was an intense emotional experience in movie theaters, where it’s grossed nearly $100 million worldwide, given that it’s a grief-stricken drama about losing a child, it’s also a good choice to watch at home where you can ugly-cry in peace.
No sir. Hamnet comes from Focus Features, a division of Universal Pictures, which means it’s streaming on that company’s platform, Peacock. You can also pay to rent it digitally on the usual outlets: Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and so on. But to stream it with a subscription, you’ll want to head to Peacock.
Universal titles aren’t Peacock exclusives in perpetuity. You will eventually be able to stream Hamnet on Prime Video with a Prime subscription, around four months after the movie streams on Peacock. This is thanks to the deal between Universal and Amazon that sends Universal movies to Peacock for the first four months of the “Pay 1 window,” then to Amazon Prime Video for the next months of the window, followed by four more months on Peacock. If our prediction for when Hamnet will be on Peacock is correct, then you should see Hamnet streaming on Prime around July 2026. For now, though, it’s a Peacock title.
Peacock currently offers two subscription types: Premium with ads and Premium Plus ad-free. Peacock Premium costs $10.99/month, while Premium Plus costs $16.99/month.
You can save a bit by subscribing to one of Peacock’s annual plans, which give you 12 months for the price of 10. These cost either $109.99 with ads or $169.99 without ads.
Peacock Premium Plus is also available to subscribe to via Prime Video with a seven-day free trial that you can’t get by subscribing directly on Peacock.
