Amy Madigan Confirms She and Zach Cregger Are Working On a ‘Weapons’ Prequel Starring Aunt Gladys: “I Trust Zach and He’s Got A Lot Of Whack Ideas In His Head”

Weapons fans, rejoice, as Amy Madigan has confirmed that a prequel centered around Aunt Gladys is in the works.

Moments after stepping off stage at the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday, Madigan — who took home the hardware for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the 2025 horror flick written and directed by Zach Cregger — joined journalists backstage and shared that

“I’ve been asked that quite a number of times, Zach Cregger, who’s our writer-director, kind of says, ‘Yes, this is going to happen,” Madigan said on Sunday. “But, we know how long stuff takes, we know what this business is like and nothing is real until it is with timing and all those things. But if it worked out, that’d be great because I trust Zach and he’s got a lot of whack ideas in his head.”

Fans have been asking Cregger to get to work on exploring a prequel with Madigan’s character at the helm after her eerie portrayal caught the attention of film fanatics and critics alike. In the blockbuster hit — which also stars Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, and Austin Abrams — Madigan plays a witch who is sucking the life force out of an entire second-grade class.

While it may sound unconventional, Madigan says she found her character in the movie to be profoundly moving, even if the world sees her as a parasite.

“She’s kind of inspring in a way,” Madigan said on Sunday of Aunt Gladys. “I just knew I could grab it by the throat. She’s someone whose just pushed to the limit.”

Let’s hope the prequel explores how she got to the point where we see her in Weapons.
