Socialist candidate Emmanuel Grégoire was in the lead ahead of former culture minister Rachida Dati after the first round of voting for Paris mayor, pollsters indicated Sunday as a coalition of left-wing parties bids to extend its 25 years at the French capital's helm.

A separate exit poll found Sarah Knafo, a rising star on the far right, also may top the threshold to compete in the second round, although she seemed to have underperformed according to previous polls.

"The women and men of Paris have put us clearly in the lead in this first round," Grégoire said.
