The electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) industry is looking less like science fiction and more like the future of transportation. Today, Joby Aviation (NYSE: JOBY) and Archer Aviation (NYSE: ACHR) are among the companies leading the charge.
Both are advancing toward commercial air taxi operations while expanding into defense and autonomous aviation. If eVTOLs become mainstream, these early leaders could have significant room to grow, delivering massive upside for investors who get in early.

Joby's certification lead makes it the logical place to start. Joby is looking less like a speculative aircraft start-up and more like a company building an entirely new transportation system. That's because the biggest selling point for early investors is that Joby is making progress on several fronts at once: aircraft certification, manufacturing, and infrastructure.
In its latest update, the company said it made its biggest progress yet in the final stage of FAA Type Certification, with aircraft already flying and additional vehicles moving through production.
That progress matters because Joby's opportunity extends far beyond simply selling aircraft. Ultimately, the company wants to run an aerial ride-sharing network, allowing passengers to book all-electric flights that can bypass congested roads.
Plus, its partnership with Virgin Atlantic is particularly interesting because it gives the company a path to integrate air taxi trips directly into an established airline's customer journey in the U.K., while its partnership with Toyota Motor is designed to bring automotive-style manufacturing to aircraft production.
The company has also partnered with Atoms to develop multimodal transportation hubs across U.S. launch markets and has been preparing for operations through the White House-backed eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP). At the same time, its work in Dubai provides the company with an important international launch opportunity and a chance to demonstrate that electric taxis can serve as an actual transportation service.
Although Joby has one of the most advanced commercial programs, another company is pursuing ambitious plans across air taxis, defense, and aviation software.
Archer Aviation has also been busy, having already achieved a major FAA certification milestone on its Midnight aircraft. It became the first eVTOL developer to close Phase 3 of the FAA's four-phase type certification process, while its flight-testing program continues to expand.
Meanwhile, Midnight completed a piloted flight between Salinas and Monterey, providing solid proof that the company can deliver the kind of short trips it hopes to offer commercially. From there, Archer launched its "No Roads" flight tour, conducting more city-to-city flights in coordination with the FAA while preparing for operations through the federal eIPP program.
Archer is also making meaningful progress internationally. In the UAE, regulators have moved Midnight into a Restricted Type Certificate pathway, providing a streamlined route to limited commercial operations. That makes the UAE an important early market for Archer's international expansion.
But perhaps the biggest reason Archer could surprise investors is what is happening outside Midnight. Its partnership with Anduril has produced a new autonomous hybrid VTOL platform with both commercial and defense variants, while Archer has introduced ZEE, an AI model designed specifically for aviation. These initiatives give Archer potential exposure to defense and aviation intelligence, in addition to passenger taxis.
Taken together, commercial aviation, defense, and aviation AI could provide investors with further upside beyond a successful air taxi business.
Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation offer a rare chance to get in early on what could become a completely new type of transportation, but they fit different kinds of investors. If eVTOL adoption reaches massive scale, the companies that establish themselves today could turn an early stake into a massive payoff for investors who got in before the industry went mainstream.
