New video angle reveals what unfolded with Yankees fan during interference controversy

Make New York Post a Preferred Source There is no question about the Yankees fan’s excitement over catching a blast from Anthony Volpe on Wednesday night in The Bronx.

A video has revealed a new angle of the moment a fan stuck out his arms over the ledge of the left-field fence to catch a towering fly ball from the Yankees infielder in the bottom of the sixth inning during Game 3 of the ALDS.

After the catch, the video shows the fan in a dark blue Yankees bomber jacket pumping his fist in the air while holding the baseball. Seemingly his friends and other fans around him were jumping up and down, and hugging each other in celebration as the crowd went wild.

As the replay was put on the big screen, men gathered around the now-famed Yankees fan as he held the ball in the air and turned back to the crowd.

The incident turned into a lengthy review and eventually turned what would have been a game-tying home run into an RBI double due to spectator interference.

That kept the Yankees down 4-3 and that is the way Game 3 ended, with an ALDS sweep for Tamp Bay.

The fan was removed from the stadium and videos went viral as several members of security and a uniformed NYPD officer escorted him out.

He left with another fan, who was wearing a pinstripe jacket and matching hat.

MLB later defended the decision in a statement following the game.

The league said it “definitively determined the spectator interfered with the ball over the field of play” after looking at “all relevant angles.”

“The ball would not have left the playing field nor would it have been caught. The call is OVERTURNED, there was spectator interference and no home run,” the statement read. “Additionally, the Replay Official scored one run and placed the batter-runner at second.”

The Rays will move on to play either the Guardians or White Sox in the ALCS.

The White Sox currently lead the best-of-five ALDS series 2-1 after a 9-3 Cleveland win on Wednesday.
