President Donald Trump purchased between $5 million and $25 million in Meta Platforms stock in August and bought up to $5 million in SpaceX debt two days before signing a national space transportation policy, a newly released government financial disclosure shows.
The single biggest trade in the 18-page filing was a Meta Platforms stock buy on Aug. 21, with a reported value of between $5 million and $25 million, according to CNBC. That same day, the accounts added positions of $1 million to $5 million each in AT&T, ConocoPhillips, Abbott Laboratories, Netflix, and Chevron, while trimming Advanced Micro Devices and Church & Dwight by similar amounts, and shedding sub-million-dollar positions in Boeing, Home Depot, T-Mobile, Datadog, Dell Technologies, Palo Alto Networks, and Nvidia, according to CNBC.
According to CNBC, the filing also reveals that on Aug. 18, Trump's accounts acquired SpaceX senior unsecured notes — with a 5.35% interest rate and a July 2031 maturity date — valued at $1 million to $5 million. On Aug. 20, Trump signed the national space transportation policy, which sets a goal of 1,000-plus launches and reentries per year by 2030 and instructs agencies to open federal launch facilities to commercial users and draw in private capital for space infrastructure. SpaceX is a major Pentagon contractor and NASA launch provider, according to CNBC.
Earlier purchases of SpaceX shares were far more modest, with filings from June and July each showing buys in the $15,001-to-$50,000 range and a July sale of between $1,001 and $15,000, according to CNBC. Neither the White House nor SpaceX had responded to CNBC's inquiries by the time of publication.
Across the full month, CNBC tallied 517 transactions with a combined reported value of approximately $74.3 million to $273.3 million; of that, buy-side activity came to at least $44.2 million and sell-side activity to at least $30.1 million. That pace was still well below the prior two months, each of which had topped 1,000 disclosed transactions, according to CNBC.
Trump's accounts have maintained heavy trading activity throughout his second term. His July disclosure, which showed Microsoft and Amazon stock sales reaching up to $25 million apiece, covered 1,156 transactions totaling between roughly $79 million and $270 million. The White House has said independent advisors manage the accounts without Trump's input, through automated model portfolios benchmarked to indexes such as the Schwab 1000.
The August disclosure was received by the U.S. Office of Government Ethics on Sept. 25, according to the filing.
