Elon Musk is drawing a hard line around control of Terafab, saying his companies will build and operate the planned Texas AI chip complex themselves while leaving Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE:TSM) only a potential subleasing role. The clarification matters for Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA), SpaceX and Intel because it narrows speculation that TSMC could take over the project and reshapes how investors should think about the economics and strategic control of Musk's semiconductor ambitions.

No, we will build and run the fab. Let there be ZERO doubt about that. Maybe TSMC subleases part of the Terafab if they want, but nothing more than that, Musk said on X.

Terafab is a planned Texas semiconductor complex intended to produce advanced AI chips for Musk's businesses, including Tesla's autonomous-driving and robotics efforts and SpaceXAI's computing needs. Intel is currently helping develop the underlying manufacturing technology and said Wednesday that it expects to remain involved.

Musk's comments follow several days of uncertainty after he confirmed discussions with TSMC about possible cooperation. That sparked speculation that the world's largest contract chipmaker might eventually own or operate the facility, potentially weakening Intel's role. Musk's latest statement largely shuts down that scenario.

TSMC, meanwhile, is separately evaluating a new manufacturing campus in Texas as it expands its U.S. footprint.

For Tesla and SpaceX investors, the key issue is execution risk. Building and operating an advanced semiconductor fab internally gives Musk's companies greater control over capacity and supply, but it also exposes them to the enormous capital requirements and manufacturing complexity normally handled by specialist foundries.

Intel investors should watch whether its role remains central as Terafab develops, particularly around process technology and production volumes.

For TSMC, a limited sublease arrangement would be far less financially significant than operating the facility outright.

The next major catalyst is a formal partnership structure. Until Musk's companies disclose ownership, capital commitments, process technology and production timelines, Terafab remains strategically important but financially difficult to model.
