Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN, Financials), the e-commerce and cloud computing company, is expanding Ring beyond cameras and doorbells with its first smart lock.

The Ring Smart Lock will give users four ways to unlock a door: fingerprint recognition, a touchscreen keypad, the Ring app or Amazon's Alexa voice assistant. A built-in dial can also generate enough emergency power to reactivate the lock when its battery runs out.

That feature addresses one of the practical problems with battery-powered smart locks without requiring a backup key or external power source.

The bigger opportunity for Amazon is how the lock fits into Ring's existing ecosystem. It can connect with Ring doorbells, cameras and alarms and use Amazon Sidewalk for remote connectivity without depending on home Wi-Fi.

Ring also introduced four new 4K security cameras, suggesting Amazon is building a broader connected-security lineup rather than treating the lock as a stand-alone product.

The source does not disclose pricing or whether customers will need a Ring subscription, making the potential revenue impact difficult to judge.

The lock still requires Federal Communications Commission authorization before it can be sold. Its planned U.S. launch in early 2027 will be the next test of whether Ring can turn its large home-security presence into demand for another connected device.
