Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN, Financials), the e-commerce and cloud computing behemoth, is trimming another wave of corporate jobs as it continues to recalibrate a workforce that ballooned during the epidemic. The most recent cuts impact a few hundred white-collar staff, mostly inside Amazon's Stores group that runs the company's primary e-commerce business. The cuts include sections of the retail operation, including as customer service, marketplace support, selling partner services and engineering. Employees in U.S., U.K. and India were impacted.Amazon said it made changes in portions of the Stores division because the new structure would better serve its aims. The layoffs are relatively tiny in comparison to the wider 30,000-job decrease that began over the last year, but they underscore Amazon's ongoing emphasis on efficiency. The company's continuous work force changes are partially a reflection of how quickly Amazon employed during the epidemic when online shopping demand increased, said Executive Chairman Jeff Bezos. The real concern for investors is not so much about the current 1,000 jobs, but whether periodic restructuring can make Amazon's sprawling retail business more effective without slowing growth or hurting customer experience. The layoffs also landed amid Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days shopping extravaganza, placing the company's cost discipline in the spotlight alongside one of its key seasonal retail pushes. The next catalyst will be Amazon's next set of financial reports, when investors may look for indications that continuing cost cuts are translating to improved retail profitability.
