In the latest film in the Nellie Knows Mysteries series, Nellie is invited to a dinner party where a woman reveals that she’s cutting the rest of her family out of her will. Moments later, shots ring out, a man is dead, and Nellie has to investigate to figure out who committed the crime and why.

The Gist: Nellie Parker (Hutton) is the author of a local newspaper advice column, Nellie Knows. After receiving a letter from an anonymous resident in town inquiring about how they should break some unsettling news to family, Nellie is invited to a dinner party where the woman who wrote the letter, the fabulously wealthy Palmer Arlott, plans to reveal said news to her family. Nellie asks her kind-of boyfriend Michael Hogan (Kavan Smith), a detective, to be her plus one, and while they’re at the incredibly uncomfortable meal attended by an extended family that seems to all hate each other, Palmer reveals that she’s leaving all of them out of her will and leaving her entire estate to her Pomeranian, Moxie.

Moments later, the electricity goes out and gunshots are fired. Palmer’s lawyer, Adam, lies dead on the floor, but Palmer exclaims that the bullet lodged in his body must have been meant for her, taking off the headpiece she was wearing to reveal where the bullet grazed it.

Nellie may have been invited to the part to help keep things civil between the guests, but it’s a good thing she happens to also be an amateur detective, because Michael asks her to help him investigate each of Palmer’s estranged siblings and the rest of the guests who were at the house at the time of the murder. At the same time, Nellie and Michael are still attracted to each other and in the early stages of dating, which is complicated by the fact that Michael’s ex-wife, Leah, was catering the dinner and was at the mansion at the time of the killing. That makes Leah a suspect herself because she – along with almost everyone else at the house that night – is clearly hiding something. But while everyone’s got their secrets, only one of them pulled the trigger. But who?

What Movies Will It Remind You Of? Nellie Knows Mysteries: All Manners of Murder has the comedic tone of Only Murders in the Building, but the movie’s setting at a beautifully mossy old manor gives off more quaint and cozy vibes of British mysteries like Midsomer Murders.

Performance Worth Watching: Pascale Hutton and Kavan Smith are longtime co-stars and collaborators, first appearing together on Hallmark’s When Calls The Heart as couple Rosemary and Lee, and now in the Nellie Knows Mysteries. It’s the pair’s chemistry with each other that really shines in these movies, bringing a familiarity that lends humor and realness to their relationship. Even though the murder mystery is at the heart of the movie, this duo is the reason to watch.

Our Take: If you need any evidence as to why Hallmark movies are so wildly successful, or why so many of the same actors appear over and over on the channel, Nellie Knows Mysteries: All Manners of Murder is a solid example. The film features two of the channel’s recognizable faces, Hutton and Smith, whose rapport is fun and flirtatious; despite their relationship being in the early stages, they banter like an old married couple and are delightful to watch together. They’re clearly having fun playing detective together, and they’ve got a solid script to work from, full of twists.

All Manners of Murder is more than just a cut and dry whodunnit. New clues, new motives, and intriguing relationships pop up throughout the movie – which is one of the most engrossing Hallmark mysteries we’ve seen lately – and keep things genuinely interesting right up until the very end.

Our Call: Nellie Knows Mysteries: All Manners of Murder exceeds expectations, delivering the platonic ideal of a cozy murder mystery, featuring charming characters and a case that keeps you guessing the whole way through. STREAM IT!
