I’ve been sleeping on my Avocado mattress for 2 years — my review

New York Post Composite With hundreds of mattress brands on the market, choosing which company to go with can be quite the challenge.

Our recommendation? Determine the factors that matter to you most, find reviews that favorably speak to those criteria and go from there. If comfort and sustainability are top of mind, look no further than Avocado: the leading mattress brand for eco-friendly bedding and furniture.

In 2016, Avocado launched its brand with a luxurious, organic mattress of the same name as its brand (made from non-toxic, natural and organic materials) that was actually budget-friendly, considering the high-quality materials the brand uses. The company, which has launched seven other models since, designs its mattresses in Hoboken, New Jersey, and makes them by hand in its Los Angeles factory.

If you’re not yet convinced of their commitment to sustainability and comfort, the brand is a certified B Corp and Climate Neutral certified. All the brand’s products are GOTS-certified organic and according to the brand, its factories divert 78% of its waste from landfills. Plus, as members of 1% For the Planet, they donate 1 percent of their revenue to vetted nonprofits.

As for affordability, upon our own research of competitors, the average organically-made queen mattress runs at about $2,000 — making most of Avocado’s mattresses of the same size a fair price in this market.

To put the brand to the test, I decided to swap my old mattress and try out the Avocado Green Mattress that started it all.

The Avocado Green Mattress comes in sizes twin to California king and is available in three models: firm/standard (best for back and stomach sleepers), medium (great for side, back and combo sleepers) and plush (ideal for side sleepers and pressure relief). I opted for the medium model as I’m a side sleeper and my husband is a back sleeper.

This mattress is needle-tufted by hand and assembled in Los Angeles with domestic and imported materials. It features GOLS-certified organic latex, GOTS-certified organic wool and cotton, and up to 1,459 individually wrapped support coils arranged in seven ergonomic zones. The plush model adds soft FSC-certified Talalay latex and contains no polyurethane foams or fire retardants.

All Avocado Green Mattresses feature up to a 365-day sleep trial and a 25-year warranty, plus easy financing with Affirm. You can also enjoy in-home delivery and setup for an extra cost.

After more than 10 years on our trusty queen-sized Sealy Posturepedic, my husband and I decided it was time to get a new mattress and upgrade to a king. After ordering our Avocado Green Mattress, it took less than a week to arrive at my doorstep.

Note: I had to reschedule my delivery and this was an incredibly easy process for something that can normally be pretty annoying. The brand uses a third-party website that helps you make these changes efficiently — a great perk! Plus, the brand also offers to remove your old mattress if needed.

The unboxing was very easy, but we probably could have done a better job. Like most modern-day mattress brands, the product came in a box, rolled and sealed, and is basically vacuum-wrapped in plastic and paper. Once you remove the paper everything happens very quickly — it took probably less than two minutes to expand. Unfortunately, the mattress was unfurling upside-down, so we had to flip it when it was at its full size — a small headache but a relatively easy lift and flip.

Unlike other new mattresses, there was zero smell. One of the things I love about this mattress is knowing it’s made from safe, organic materials and I don’t need to worry about it smelling weird or having toxins.

Avocado Green Mattress First impressions: Compared to our previous mattress (Sealy Posturepedic), it felt firm but incredibly comfortable, especially with the built-in mattress topper.

Most mornings since we’ve gotten the new mattress, my husband and I wake up and say something along the lines of “Wow, this mattress.” We both agree that it’s alleviated some long-term back issues we’ve both been dealing with.

After unboxing and getting set up, we were most interested in evaluating how comfortable the mattress was. The things I cared about most were:

I kept different types of sleepers in mind for this part of testing, which was fairly easy, as I’m a side sleeper (sometimes a stomach sleeper) and my husband is a back sleeper.

To me, a supportive mattress is one that feels durable — making it an even sharper value for customers. During the original testing period (and since), neither my husband or I noticed that “sink-in” feeling that sometimes happens with a mattress.

One thing that’s special about the Avocado Mattress is that it has responsive support from up to 1,379 individually wrapped coils, which helps it to relieve pressure. This also gives it a slight buoyancy from the latex, plus the seven ergonomic zones mean we’re getting extra cushion in all the right spots, like the hips, knees, arms and head.

Most mornings, I woke feeling refreshed and well rested. Falling asleep on the new mattress was easy, too. My husband also seemed to enjoy it. It’s effortlessly soft at the top, with a gentle yet fibrous touch. Even though we opted for the pillow top variation of the mattress, it still feels firm enough to satisfy both of us — my husband, specifically, prefers a firmer option and would be even happy sleeping on a wooden plank!

Avocado designs its mattress to be naturally cooling through the materials it uses. Latex, along with providing support and bounce, doesn’t trap heat, while the coils promote better airflow. Similarly, organic wool is naturally moisture-wicking.

Whether you run hot or cold, this is a mattress feature I knew was important to many. I paid attention to how my body felt while lounging in bed, but also made note if I woke up in the middle of the night to any temperature issues. It wasn’t like sleeping on a sheet of ice, but I was comfortable.

I’ll get more into this in the “how we tested” section of my review, but customer service is perhaps one of the most important parts of any brand. When I had to reschedule my delivery day and time due to a last-minute scheduling issue, Avocado made it very easy to change my time slot with their automated scheduling system. Easy peasy!

Along with comfort, support, and all the other things I mentioned above, obviously, I had to test how the mattress performed. And whether he liked it or not, my husband was along for the ride. (Fortunately, this wasn’t an issue.)

The temperature feels very comfortable – I didn’t feel overly hot or cold when sleeping. I like to sleep in a cool room and typically sleep with the AC on — even in the colder months. I was impressed that this mattress kept a nice, regulated temperature. I never noticed feeling hot in bed, and during the initial testing, which took place during springtime in Brooklyn, I experienced all different types of weather.

My husband and I opted for a kind size. Needless to say, the bed is huge. Still, we didn’t notice any sloping at the edges until the ninth month, which speaks to the durability and support of the mattress.

For some people, motion transfer is really important, which I get. On nights I was trying to sleep and my husband was still getting settled, I was aware of it, but it was kind of like a gentle sway — almost what I remember a water bed feels like (though I haven’t been on one of those in decades)!

That being said, when I did fall asleep, I did not wake from my husband getting up or adjusting his position. Honestly, since it’s a king, my husband can toss and turn or climb out of the bed, and I still don’t wake up, until the creek on our floor near the door gives him away!

Jacqueline Goldstein Avocado Green Mattress How it compares to other mattresses on the market We were sleeping on a Sealy Posturepedic Port Cartier Luxury Plush Mattress that I bought from Sleepy’s about a decade ago. That was a great mattress that I did enjoy and served me well for many years, but we were ready to upgrade to a king.

We also have a second home and have been sleeping on a Helix Midnight for the past few years there. It’s a lot firmer, but also a very nice mattress. The Avocado Green Mattress feels like a more nuanced and luxurious mattress. The medium firmness is just right: not too hard, not too soft, but the plushness of the topper makes it such a treat to get into bed.

My husband and I have been sleeping on the Avocado mattress for two glorious years now. It’s fared well and getting into my bed is still startlingly comfortable every night. The Avocado mattress topper, I think, is where this magic happens: the material feels almost like a thick linen through the sheets and it’s so gentle and supportive.

When it comes to motion transfer, I do notice it a bit more, but that could be because I’m particularly sensitive to movement — thanks to my cat. Most mornings, she jumps onto the bed to wake me up for breakfast, and I’ve gotten used to anticipating the gentle thud of her paws near the foot of the bed, followed by the subtle sensation of her making her way up toward my pillow.

That said, I still strongly recommend this mattress to people all the time. It’s the most luxurious mattress I’ve ever slept on! It makes me feel like a privileged guest at The White Lotus every night.

While this mattress is a splurge, given how long you can expect to use it, I’d absolutely recommend it and think it’s worth the price. I love how it can fit me, my husband, and my cat super comfortably without the need to contort for the cat’s space.

I’m so happy with our new mattress and honestly look forward to going to bed every day!

Jacqueline Goldstein How we tested To provide a comprehensive review of the mattress, I evaluated based on the following criteria: the overall comfort, support, the heat level, and Avocado’s customer service.

“It’s important to consider your build (height/weight), and your sleep position (side, back, stomach, combination) when choosing a mattress,” said Logan Foley, Sleep Science Coach and Managing Editor at the Sleep Foundation. “For instance, a sleeper who is 5’1 and weighs less than 130 pounds could find a mattress more firm than someone who is 6’1 and over 230 pounds.”

“When buying online, a consumer won’t have access to a customer service representative to help them with their specific sleep needs,” Foley said. “This means they need to be more aware of what they want in a mattress than someone who shops in-store.”

Overall: The Sleep Foundation suggests a medium soft firmness level for sleepers under 130 pounds, medium firm between 130-230 pounds, and extra firm for sleepers 230+ pounds.
