However, the first Jamie and Claire sex scene we get in Outlander‘s final season is less about the euphoric highs of passion than the deep need to bury yourself in your true love’s arms. Outlander is officially in its end game now and that means the Starz hit’s main couple have to confront the idea that their eternal love may actually have an end date after all.

**Spoilers for Outlander Season 8 Episode 2 “Prophecies,” now streaming on Starz**

Last week’s Outlander Season 8 premiere ended with Jamie revealing to Claire that he had started to read Frank Randall’s (Tobias Menzies) history book that their daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) had brought back from the future. In the book, Frank alleges that James Fraser will die at a battle happening in a year’s time.

This week’s Outlander ends with poor Jamie obsessing over this revelation. He begins to hear Frank’s voice in his head, taunting him about his impending demise.

“It’s very dramatic and I think certainly it’s plaguing Jamie and on his mind for a majority of this season,” Sam Heughan told DECIDER.

So what’s a tortured Scotsman to do? Well, Jamie wakes wife Claire from her slumber, telling her, “I need you.” He even repeats it: “I need you.”

The two then begin to have quick sex under the covers. Jamie wastes no time burying himself in Claire’s arms. She moans in ecstasy as the thrusts become harder, more desperate.

It’s a far cry from the euphoric honeymoon sex scenes of seasons past, but this Outlander Season 8 sex scene speaks to the powerful bond the couple share. Jamie and Claire have a rare ability to constantly find solace in each other’s embrace. Ironically, it’s that physical connection that haunts Jamie’s thoughts.

After they’ve finished, Claire cozies up to Jamie, happily falling asleep in his arms. Jamie then hears Frank again.

“You’re going to die,” Frank’s voice ominously warns. “Who will hold her once you’re gone?”

When DECIDER asked Sam Heughan about this development, he admitted that he initially didn’t like the fact that Outlander brought early series star Tobias Menzies back for this voice echoing in Jamie’s head.

“Would Jamie know what his voice sounded like?” Heughan said. “Personally, I didn’t love the fact that we hear his voice, because I think it should almost be Jamie’s voice.”

“But it’s a tough one because he’s plagued by this character. And it is Jamie’s fears that are, you know, personifying it in his head.”

So who will hold Claire when Jamie’s gone? Is Jamie somehow imagining it will be Frank, who is already dead two centuries in the future? And can true love really survive death?

Outlander Season 8 seems to be setting up an ending that will question even the strength of Jamie and Claire’s magical bond.
