Investing.com -- Amazon confirmed a new round of job cuts on Wednesday, primarily in its Stores division, adding to the company's workforce reductions even as it ramps up spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The latest cuts affect fewer than 1,000 white-collar employees across the U.S., India and the U.K., according to a person familiar with the matter cited by Business Insider, with employees reporting reductions across customer service, marketplace support and engineering roles within Amazon's retail operations.

Amazon said the changes were intended to reshape parts of its Stores business around its current priorities, according to the report.

The cuts come after Amazon eliminated roughly 30,000 corporate jobs late last year and in January, as Chief Executive Andy Jassy sought to reduce layers of management, streamline the organization and lower costs.

The latest reductions have also created uncertainty among employees, with internal messages raising questions about severance, access to internal job openings and whether further notifications could follow.

Business Insider reported that some managers had scaled back planning for coming quarters because of expectations that teams or priorities could change.

Amazon said it was eliminating a small number of roles and would support affected employees during the transition, according to the report.

The restructuring is part of a wider shift across the technology sector, where companies are reducing jobs in some functions while directing more resources toward AI. Meta eliminated about 8,000 positions in May, while Microsoft cut more than 5,000 jobs between July and September.

Amazon has also been approaching some former employees, including people affected by previous layoffs, about openings in AWS and its AI businesses, highlighting the shift in where the company is directing talent and investment.

The latest cuts come during Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days promotional event, adding a notable timing element to the restructuring of its core retail operations.
