We’re handing out Oscars for the all-time best in sports movies — from ‘Bull Durham’ to Ivan Drago By Brian Lewis Published March 13, 2026, 12:30 p.m. ET New York Post With “F1” and “Marty Supreme” facing off for Best Picture at Sunday’s Academy Awards, looking to go down in sports movie history, the genre is in the limelight.

But while only three sports movies — “Rocky,” “Chariots of Fire” and “Million Dollar Baby” — have ever claimed a Best Picture Oscar, many have created indelible memories. Many have surpassed simple victory or defeat to serve as microcosms of life.

Sometimes when you win, you really lose. And sometimes when you lose, you really win. From the self-destruction of “Raging Bull” to the costly lessons of “The Hustler” and even the regrets of “On The Waterfront,” the best sports movies show people in all their flaws. In short, they’re human.

The genre is rife with great pictures and great performances. The Post has picked out the best of the best.
