Entire California school up for sale after it suddenly shut down leaving parents and staff reeling

Make California Post a Preferred Source School’s out forever.

After abruptly closing its doors and filing for bankruptcy this summer, an entire Southern California school campus is listed for sale.

The campus of Palm Valley School in Rancho Mirage has hit the market after the school shuttered in June. The listing is asks $14 million for the sprawling 36-acre campus, which features a preschool, lower school, upper school, and middle school, all in separate buildings.

The campus also has a baseball field, softball field, soccer/lacross/football field, basketball courts, and multiple parking areas.

Palm Valley School has a 74-year history. Founded in 1952, PVS had been operating at its Rancho Mirage location since 1992. It was the only private, co-educational, non-religious college-preparatory day school in the Coachella Valley, according to the school’s website, which remains online despite its closed doors.

The school’s listing advertises 53 classrooms, a full gymnasium, a science lab, and an outdoor amphitheater.

Parents and staff were devastated by the school’s abrupt closure after being given false hope that it would remain open.

The school’s community was first alerted to their financial troubles in April, when the school school revealed to parents that they were exploring a potential partnership or merger with an unknown international educational organization, according to the Coachella Valley Independent.

The school then urged parents to submit enrollment contracts and deposits by May 1.

In May, the school announced that they had received a gift to the school that would guarantee it could remain open for the next school year, and possibly future years.

The next week, the school’s tone shifted, and they revealed that were budgeted for 245 students for the 2026-27 academic year, and would need an increase enrollment to combat further challenge.

In June, the school announced that they would be filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and would not open for the upcoming school year.

“The board didn’t approach us to find other ways to keep the school open. They had lied to us about where we were (financially) and about the families and teachers who were trying to raise money to help the school. It was devastating for me. I enjoyed working there, Shaymi Ristaino, a PVS teacher and parent told the CV Independent.

In addition to losing her job, Ristaino said she never got the enrollment fee for her daughter back.
