FuelCell Energy announced today that Matthew Latino has joined the leadership team and is now serving as the company's executive vice president, chief financial officer (CFO), and treasurer, replacing Michael Bishop, who served as the company's CFO for the past 15 years.
Previously, Latino had served as senior vice president, finance and segment chief financial officer for Xylem and its nearly $2 billion measurement and control solutions business.
Besides the transition in management, FuelCell Energy announced it was reaffirming its target of achieving positive adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2027, "subject to the planned increase in annualized production rate, the conversion of awarded capacity backlog into committed backlog, customer delivery schedules and continued execution of the Company's cost reduction initiatives."
FuelCell Energy reported Q3 2026 financial results in early September, including adjusted EBITDA of negative $36.7 million.
While investors may see the transition on the management team as something troubling, it seems to be much ado about nothing. Similarly, some investors are likely selling shares due to the company reaffirming its target of achieving positive adjusted EBITDA in Q4 2027 — impatient to wait so long to see the improvement in profitability.
Although shares are trading at a lower price today, it's important to recognize that this hydrogen stock remains highly speculative, so those with low risk tolerances may prefer to consider one of FuelCell Energy's more established peers for hydrogen-industry exposure.
