Apple Inc. (AAPL, Financials), the consumer technology company, is reportedly working with LG Electronics on seven smart-home devices as it looks for a bigger role inside consumers' homes.

The planned lineup includes a video doorbell, smart deadbolt, thermostat, temperature sensor and three security cameras. The products would carry LG branding, while Apple would help shape their design, features and engineering.
Apple has largely relied on outside accessory makers to fill HomeKit categories, leaving its own smart-home hardware centered on products such as HomePod and Apple TV. Working closely with LG could broaden that ecosystem without requiring Apple to manufacture and support an entirely new product portfolio itself.
Regulatory filings for the LG devices have already been submitted, according to the report. Most are expected to support Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Thread and Matter, while the smart lock could use ultra-wideband technology to recognize when a user approaches.
The partnership could eventually stretch beyond security devices. The report said LG appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines could become more closely connected with Apple's home ecosystem over time.
For investors, the immediate financial contribution is unclear because pricing and availability have not been disclosed. The bigger question is whether Apple can turn its enormous installed device base into a stronger position against Amazon's Ring and Google's Nest.
