McDonald’s is bringing back its iconic Monopoly promotion, giving customers a shot at cashing in on a $1 million grand prize — and bringing back the classic peel-off stickers from 1987.
Inspired by the classic board game, the sweepstakes urges classic menu fans to grab Monopoly stickers from food wrappers, cups and boxes that can be swapped for prizes. Some stickers boast a free drink or fries; others need to be collected, then turned in for a bigger reward.
Monopoly players must get the McDonald’s App and sign up as a MyMcDonald’s Rewards member. picture alliance via Getty Images Once shoppers get their Quarter Pounder, they can peel off the sticker, scan it on the McDonald’s app, then redeem their prize.
A free order of fries is good, but a gift card to Ulta Beauty or Grubhub is better — and those are prizes McDonald’s promises are on the sweepstakes menu this year.
Players can also win direct cash payouts of up to $50,000 for mortgage down-payments or college debt.
Other rewards include a Polaris vehicle or a trip to Kennedy Space Center, with major wins including a free Carnival cruise or a 2027 Jeep Cherokee.
Players can scan up to eight pieces per day, with opportunities to earn bonus scans by ordering through the app. McDonald's But the promotion is bringing back flashbacks for some Golden Arches visitors, who might remember the McDonald’s Monopoly game’s dramatic history:
Between 1989 and 2001, the game was the center of a massive $24 million criminal conspiracy orchestrated by Jerry Jacobson, an ex-cop who became the security auditor for Simon Worldwide, the marketing company running the promo.
Jacobson stole high-value game pieces before they could reach McDonald’s locations and funneled them through a network of family members, friends and petty crooks who all posed as legitimate winners.
The scam inspired the hit HBO documentary series “McMillion$” and helped inspire McDonald’s to completely overhaul its security protocols. Now, no single employee has access to top prizes, and digital tracking is part of every game piece.
Game pieces will be available while supplies last through Nov. 1, but players collecting special “Chance Cards” will have until Nov. 8.
The deadline to claim any winnings is Nov. 22, and come with an appetite: Most prizes, according to McDonald’s, will be food.
