If you loved Emily the Criminal, then you should know that the Emily the Criminal writer/director has a new movie in theaters this weekend starring Glen Powell, called How to Make a Killing.
Written and directed by John Patton Ford, How to Make a Killing is a loose remake of the 1949 British film Kind Hearts and Coronets, by Robert Hamer and John Dighton. This new film stars Powell as Becket Redfellow, who was disowned by his crazy rich family and grew up with a working-class, blue collar family instead. But as an adult, he’s determined to get a piece of the inheritance that he’s owed, and he won’t let anyone—or any of his wealthy family members—stop him.
The stacked How to Make a Killing cast includes Margaret Qualley, Jessica Henwick, Bill Camp, Zach Woods, Topher Grace, and Ed Harris. The film received mixed reviews from critics so far, so if you’d rather wait to watch this one at home, rather than go to the movie theater, read on to find out when and where we expect to be able to watch the How to Make a Killing movie.
For now, How to Make a Killing will only be available to watch in a movie theater, when it opens in select theaters in the U.S. on Friday, February 20. You can find a showing near you via Fandango. How to Make a Killing is not yet available to watch online or on streaming.
How to Make a Killing is not streaming on Netflix and likely will not be on Netflix in the U.S. any time soon, due to the fact that the film is being released by A24 in the U.S., and the 2023 deal between A24 and Warner Bros. Discovery, brings all A24’s previous and upcoming theatrical releases to the Warner Bros. streaming service HBO Max. If you want to watch How to Make a Killing at home, you’ll have to wait for the film to be available to buy or rent on digital platforms, or wait for it to stream on HBO Max.
If you’re new to HBO Max, you can sign up for as low as $10.99/month with ads, but an ad-free subscription will cost $18.49/month.
If you want to stream even more and save a few bucks a month while you’re at it, we recommend subscribing to one of the discounted Disney+ Bundles with Hulu and HBO Max. With ads, the bundle costs $19.99/month and without ads, $32.99/month.
You might see How to Make a Killing streaming on HBO Max around late June 2026.
How to Make a Killing is not yet streaming on HBO Max. Right now, the movie is only in theaters. That said, we do expect to see How to Make a Killing streaming on HBO Max eventually—thanks to the A24 and Warner Bros. deal—but we’re not sure when.
The A24 deal is a “Pay-1 deal,” which means A24 movies will start streaming on Max in the “Pay 1 window,” meaning that Max will be the first “TV channel” to pay for the rights to The Moment, after the film has been released on digital and home media. One recent A24 title, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, began streaming on HBO Max a little over four months after its release in theaters, and about three months after its release on digital.
If How to Make a Killing follows a similar release strategy, you might see How to Make a Killing on digital in about a month, around mid-to-late March 2026, and streaming on HBO Max in about four months, around late June 2026.
This is all speculation. The A24 digital and streaming releases have varied by title. If you want to watch How to Make a Killing right away, you can catch the movie in U.S. theaters on Friday.
