Shares of Nvidia have rallied to record highs recently, bringing the company's market capitalization closer to $6 trillion.
To hit that milestone, we calculate Nvidia's stock would need to reach $248.48, less than 4% above yesterday's close.
Nvidia wasn't the first $3 trillion company. But it might be the first one to double it.
Shares of the chip giant opened down 1%, backing off recent record highs, which as of last night's close had its market value at about $5.8 trillion, the highest around. (Second on the list remains Apple, the first to top $3 trillion and only other company to crack $5 trillion, which it did in July. Nvidia got there last October.)
The stock's latest climb—it's up nearly 30% this year—now has it within view of $6 trillion. Our calculations have the magic number at $248.48, less than 4% above yesterday's close.
Big numbers like these used to be hard to envision; there weren't any $1 trillion U.S.-listed companies at all before 2018, when Apple got there. Now there are nearly 20. One of them, SpaceX, arrived on public markets that way this June; Anthropic, is expected to do the same if its IPO lands this year as expected.
Heck, Nvidia's current buyback plan—the company recently extended the amount it's authorized to repurchase through 2028 to $235 billion—is bigger than most of the companies in the S&P 500.
For now, this has been good news for many investors, including the passive ones who mostly deal in index funds and don't mind a few companies dominating the measures that underpin the investments to which their money generally flows. But the question remains: How long can this last?
