Stock futures are lower this morning after the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at record highs yesterday; the Federal Reserve is due to release the minutes of last month's policy meeting; Constellation Brands shares are sinking after the beer and spirits maker reported results; SpaceX is reportedly looking to raise $40 billion to buy more Nvidia chips; and crypto-related stocks are falling alongside bitcoin this morning. Here's what you need to know today.
Stock futures are pointing to a lower open on Wednesday after another record-setting day yesterday. Futures tied to the tech-heavy Nasdaq and the Dow Jones Industrial Average were recently down 0.7%, while S&P 500 futures slipped 0.4%. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq each closed at record highs yesterday as big tech stocks surged. WTI crude oil futures, the U.S. benchmark, were up 0.5% at around $90 per barrel this morning, while gold futures dropped 1% to $4,145 an ounce. The 10-year Treasury yield, which influences a range of consumer interest rates, was at 5.34%, up from yesterday's close of 5.29% and approaching Monday's peak of 5.35%, which was its highest level in nearly 25 years. Bitcoin was trading at $83,600, down from from a high of just under $87,000 earlier this week (more on that below).
The minutes of the latest Federal Reserve policy meeting are set to be released this afternoon, possibly giving investors clues on the outlook for interest rates. The Fed raised its benchmark rate at last month's meeting for the first time in three years, and officials have indicated in the weeks since that they might not be done hiking yet as inflation remains well above the Fed's 2% target. A weaker-than-anticipated September jobs report last week tempered investor concerns that the Fed will raise rates at its policy meeting later this month. but market participants are still pricing in an expectation that the central bank will hike again before the end of the year.
Shares of Constellation Brands (STZ) are sinking after the beer and spirits maker posted its latest earnings report. The maker of Modelo and Corona beers said it generated $2.63 billion in sales in its fiscal second quarter, up 6% year-over-year and just ahead of analysts' expectations. The company posted comparable, or adjusted, earnings of $3.74 per share, also beating estimates. However, one potential cause for concern among investors was the decline in Constellation's beer depletions, a metric that tracks shipments to retailers and serves as an indicator of demand. The company also announced the acquisition of SpikedAde, a canned vodka beverage, for $75 million with the potential for $278 million in additional payments based on sales. Constellation shares were down 5% in recent premarket trading, putting them on track to hit their lowest point since early 2020.
SpaceX (SPCX) is in talks to raise $40 billion in new financing to fund purchases of more Nvidia (NVDA) chips, according to reports. The fundraising package could consist of $10 billion in loans from banks and $30 billion in investment-grade debt, per Bloomberg and The Financial Times. The deal is reportedly expected to close sometime next year, and is the latest example of big tech companies raising hundreds of billions of dollars collectively to fund their AI data center buildout. The massive fundraising plans have spooked investors at times, amid doubts that the companies will be able to generate enough revenue to provide a return on their massive investments. SpaceX shares were down 2% ahead of the opening bell, halting their recent rally, while Nvidia shares were down less than 1%.
Bitcoin is sliding this morning after a recent rally boosted the cryptocurrency near its highest point since January. The digital asset was trading around $83,600 recently, well below this week's high of about $87,000. Several crypto-related stocks are also in the red this morning, including crypto exchanges Coinbase (COIN) and Robinhood (HOOD), bitcoin mining firm Mara Holdings (MARA), and stablecoin issuer Circle (CRCL). Shares of Strategy (MSTR), the single largest corporate holder of bitcoin, were down 3.5% recently.
