SpaceX (SPCX) could turn to the bond market for as much as $40 billion to support a planned purchase of Nvidia (NVDA) processors, with Apollo Global Management (APO) poised to organize the financing, the Financial Times reported Wednesday.

The proposed package would put institutional investors at the center of the transaction. About $30 billion could come through investment-grade bonds, while another $10 billion may be provided through bank financing.

Apollo is expected to help arrange and market the debt. Pimco was also among lenders discussing participation, according to the report.

SpaceX's BBB rating could make the bonds available to insurers and pension funds that generally have tighter limits on holdings rated below investment grade. The company obtained that rating after its $86 billion initial public offering in June.

It subsequently raised $25 billion through high-grade bonds in less than two weeks. Those securities later weakened as investors weighed SpaceX's growing borrowing needs and capital spending.

The financing is expected to be completed in 2027, giving SpaceX another potential source of funding as it expands its use of computing infrastructure for artificial intelligence.
