According to Bloomberg, SpaceX is seeking $40 billion from banks and investors to fund the purchase of Nvidia AI chips. Bloomberg noted that the talks remain preliminary and may not result in a completed transaction.

According to the Financial Times, as cited by Reuters, the Elon Musk-led company plans to secure roughly $10 billion through bank loans and another $30 billion via investment-grade debt to fund the chip purchases. Apollo Global Management is expected to lead the financing, with bond fund Pimco among a small group of lenders in discussions to provide capital, and the transaction is expected to close in 2027, according to the Financial Times.

SpaceX, Apollo, and Nvidia did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Pimco declined to comment, according to Reuters.

SpaceX stock fell about 1% in extended trading following the report. Nvidia stock rose fractionally.

The proposed deal fits into a broader pattern of large-scale AI infrastructure financing. Apollo was among six financial institutions — along with BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs, and KKR — that Nvidia partnered with in August to establish compute financing platforms intended to mobilize more than $500 billion in third-party capital for AI infrastructure buildout. Apollo has also previously struck a $7 billion financing arrangement with Musk's xAI startup for access to Nvidia chips earmarked for xAI's Colossus 2 data center in Memphis, according to Bloomberg.

SpaceX has been building out its computing business at a significant pace. The company signed an AI computing deal worth $1.1 billion per month with an undisclosed customer, adding roughly $13 billion in annualized revenue as it works toward a $100 billion annualized revenue run rate by the end of 2026. Earlier computing agreements include deals with Anthropic worth $1.25 billion monthly through May 2029, and a separate arrangement with Alphabet's Google covering $920 million per month through June 2029.

According to Bloomberg, Musk said last month that the Colossus 2 cluster at xAI could see its Nvidia chip count more than double before the year is out. The cluster currently holds 110,000 Nvidia GB200 chips and 440,000 GB300s, Musk said.
