The latest chapter of Netflix‘s hit drama — inspired by Robyn Carr’s popular novels — featured makeups, breakups, a kidnapping investigation, new folks in town, and so much more. But Season 7, Episode 10, “David and Goliath” showed the town coming together in honor of Founder’s Day, plus Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack (Martin Henderson) finally learning if whether or not they could adopt Marley’s (Rachel Drance) baby boy.
Virgin River Season 7, Episode 10 spoilers ahead.
Do Mel and Jack become parents? Do Hope (Anette O’Toole) and Doc (Tim Matheson) convince the town to turn against big businesses like Grace Valley? Do Brady (Benjamin Hollingsworth) and Brie (Zibby Allen) get their happy Season 7 ending? Does Preacher (Colin Lawrence) part ways with Jack’s Bar? And what goes down in the final minutes of the season? Decider’s Virgin River Season 7 ending explained article breaks down the biggest moments from the finale.
After leaving viewers guessing for nine episodes, Season 7’s finale wastes no time answering the looming question: Are Mel and Jack going to be parents? YES! Marley and the baby’s father tell Virgin River’s It Couple that the baby is theirs. They’re still young and aren’t ready to be parents yet, so they plan to move to Sacramento to start their next chapter together. The one condition? They ask Mel not to send updates for a while, so as not to make the painful situation more difficult.
The morning after Brie and Brady’s steamy motorcycle reunion, they wake up together and lovingly redefine their relationship. “It feels different. More real. We’re choosing each other for the right reasons this time,” Brie explains. “Why don’t we just hit reset, start fresh, and be more intentional with each other this time — kind of like we’re dating all over again for the first time, but with the benefit of everything that we learned?” For their first date post-reconciliation, Brady invites Brie to the big Founder’s Day event, but before they can get too comfortable in bed, Mel and Jack stop by to deliver their big news. Auntie Brie is thrilled, and Brady says congrats too, as they accidentally hard launch their makeup.
At long last, the event Hope’s been planning for the bulk of the season arrives! Despite all the setbacks and obstacles, Hope pulls an incredible celebration together — but not without help from her men: her husband Doc, her ex husband Roland (John Ralston), and her iconic assistant Tony (Matty Finochio). The Virgin River festivities commence, and in an impressive set piece, Hope and other community members give the people a show to remind them of Virgin River’s history. At the end of the play, Hope re-pitches her petition to keep big businesses out, and once Roland leads the charge, people enthusiastically sign.
The show of unity is heartwarming moment, Brady and Brie are going strong, and Mike (Marco Grazzini) and Victoria (Sara Canning) are on a date. Unfortunately, seasoned Virgin River fans know that things can only go swell for so long until something else goes horribly wrong. In this case, Marley has unexpected breathing issues, so Mel races her to the clinic for an exam and finds a serious setback: polyhydramnios, aka excess amniotic fluid. In order to check the baby, Mel and Doc put their pride aside and head to the Grace Valley mobile clinic to get Marley a more extensive ultrasound.
The results? The baby has superoinferior ventricles, which Doc describes as “a rare congenital heart defect where the two ventricles are positioned one above the other rather than side by side.” As a result, the heart struggles to pump blood and properly absorb amniotic fluid. So a series of operations performed by a specialist is required. When given the option to back out of the adoption, Mel and Jack make it clear that although the road ahead will be hard, their plans haven’t changed. “Because we are the people who do the hard things, and we need to bet on our son,” Mel explains.
After Doc delivers the tough news, Hope tries to cheer him up by revealing she got the required signatures to ban Grace Valley from Virgin River. While Doc would have been ecstatic at any other point in the season, following Marley’s crucial mobile clinic check-up, he has a change of heart about Dr. Hayes and the need for high-tech medical technology in town. Feeling incredibly betrayed by his switch-up, Hope urges him to sleep in his office and she heads to Roland’s for a long-overdue chat.
Hope hands him her father’s ashes and tells him Vernon is the latest man in her life to to betray her, like him and her dad. When Hope asks if she’s a sucker, Roland comes clean and rewrite history for her by revealing a truth he promised to keep secret. Turns out, Hope’’ dad didn’t leave her the family business because it was “doomed to fold.” He and Roland loved her so much that they planned to sell to save her from debt. And Roland tells Hope he still loves her!!! (One Virgin River love triangle ends, and another begins!)
When Mel finally gets word that a Heart Institute at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles specialist agreed to perform the surgery, the group heads to LA the next morning. In another jaw-dropping twist, the surgeon set to perform the intense procedure is none other than Dr. Eli Kelly (Austin Nichols), the handsome, arrogant doctor Mel fell in love with during Nurses Beyond Borders. Interesting… After a moment with Mel, Eli walks everyone through the severity of the diagnosis and the tough journey ahead.
With minutes left in the finale, an emotional Virgin River montage shows the contrast between life and death, and beginnings and endings. Hope finally spreads her father’s ashes in the river and cries in Roland’s arms. Preacher debates signing the buyout agreement to leave Jack’s Bar. Marley has the baby, and Mel and Jack ride with him in the ambulance. And in a heartbreaking cliffhanger, Brady — on his way to make Brie dinner — reminisces on their happy memories together on his bike. Just when it seems like he can finally be happy, an unexpected construction site causes him to crash his motorcycle. And his fate is left up in the air as the end credits roll.
So is Brady dead? And is Hollingsworth leaving Virgin River? While we’ll have to wait until Season 8 drops for official confirmation, I highly doubt the series would kill off a beloved OG character like this — especially since fans adore him and Brie and they finally got back together! This is likely another classic Virgin River setback that will challenge characters, just like the health issues with Mel and Jack’s baby, and the strain on Hope and Jack’s marriage. As the episode’s title suggests, though, with faith and courage even an an underdog can overcome obstacles.
