The FTSE 100 was down 0.36% as of 03:21 ET (07:21 GMT). Germany's DAX fell 0.83% and France's CAC 40 lost 0.61%. Sterling eased 0.25% to $1.3245.

Miners, financials and utilities led decliners. Miners tracked weaker metals, with gold futures down 0.75%, spot gold 0.82%, silver 1.31%, platinum 2% and copper 0.36%. Utilities fell as yields rose.

The U.S. 10-year yield rose from 5.27% at Tuesday's London close, and the 30-year was near 5.69%, with investors questioning demand for U.S. debt.

ING strategists said "we doubt rates will calmly settle at current levels." The Fed's September minutes, UK gilt tenders and a $39bn U.S. 10-year auction are due.

Ex-Iranian diplomat Abbas Khamayar told Al Jazeera Hormuz is "closed in a serious sense." The IRGC's Yadollah Javani told IRNA foreign fleets were "more than 1,000km" away, an unverified claim.

Oman said 10 crew were evacuated from the On Peace tanker, struck Tuesday off Limah. Overnight, Vance told Reuters Iran must make a "meaningful" enrichment cut, "We're not going to trade words for actions."

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump said the war would end "the nice way or the not-so-nice way" and claimed Hormuz shipments matched pre-war levels. Brent futures rose 0.72% to $101.29 a barrel and WTI gained 0.57% to $89.91. ING's Warren Patterson cited a "clear tug-of-war" between improving Gulf supply and lingering threats.
