We don’t yet know how Outlander ends. In fact, very few people apart from showrunner Matthew B. Roberts and creator Maril Davis even know which of the many endings they shot made the final cut. We do know that one of the endings hews pretty close to what author Diana Gabaldon has planned for the saga’s ending.
When DECIDER visited the set of Outlander Season 8 in 2024, Sam Heughan shared that not only had Diana shared her ending with him, but that he was pulling for it to be the show’s official ending.
“So I know Diana’s ending, obviously, and we won’t get all the books done, obviously. We’re on Season 8 and she’s still still writing,” Heughan told a roundtable of journalists in 2024.
“Who knows what the actual ending will be? I don’t know specifically. We’re going to shoot various endings, but I don’t know which one they will use,” Heughan said. “But I think one of the ideas, one I’ve been asking for pushing for, is very similar to like how Diana’s book will end.”
We’ll have to wait until the final episode of Outlander comes out on Friday, May 8 to learn how the show ends.
