Dove Cameron and Avan Jogia‘s new erotic thriller 56 Days is a whirlwind from start to finish. So if you find yourself a bit lost by the time you made it to Episode 8 of the series, which is streaming now on Prime Video, don’t worry. We’ve got you covered.
Warning: Spoilers ahead for 56 Days.
Loosely based on the 56 Days book by Catherine Ryan Howard, the Prime Video series follows Ciara (Cameron) and Oliver (Jogia) as they develop a passionate relationship after a chance meeting in the supermarket. But they’re both hiding something from each other. Ciara’s real name is Megan Martin, and she’s actually the younger sister of the guy who died in jail while serving time for a crime Oliver committed when they were teens. And she’s back to seek her revenge.
As an adult, even all these years later, Oliver is still racked with guilt and anxiety as he attempts to hide the truth from Ciara, oblivious to the fact that everything about their relationship was all part of her plan to get some type of justice for her family.
But we already know how this story ends. There’s a body decomposing in the bathtub. As detectives Karl Connolly (Dorian Missick) and Lee Reardon (Karla Souza) investigate the murder in the present day, viewers get to watch Oliver and Ciara’s relationship blossom before it crashes and burns. So, who died in 56 Days?
Keep reading to find out what happened in the 56 Days ending.
The episode begins 137 days before the body is found, when Megan (before she became Ciara) is first developing her plan to ensnare the infamous Oliver St. Leger. After overhearing her sister and her mother arguing about their home getting foreclosed by the house, Megan finds evidence he’s living in Boston and hatches her plan.
The flashback shows her first arriving at her dumpy apartment and spotting him in Boston. It also shows her printing out her fake work badge and heading for the supermarket where she first catches his eye.
Cut to today, where Karl and Lee are shaken up after someone shot up their car in a drive-by. Both detectives are luckily unharmed. But Lee insists it was Linus, the drug dealer she’s been secretly hooking up with. She realizes the shooting was ultimately a warning and feared Linus would try and kill her. Karl asks one of their colleagues to escort Lee home and make sure she has a police detail outside at all times.
Flashback to day 34 of Oliver and Ciara’s whirlwind romance: Troxler arrives at Oliver’s home, where Oliver and Ciara are enjoying breakfast together. They’ve finally come clean about everything, but their sweet moment gets interrupted by Troxler frantically banging on the door.
Troxler is furious to see Ciara in Oliver’s kitchen. After learning that Ciara and Oliver have not only been dating this entire time, but they’re staying together despite knowing the truth, Troxler tries to regain control of the situation. Ciara eventually leaves the room when Troxler asks to speak with Oliver alone. But Oliver wastes no time in firing Troxler and calling him out for keeping him “isolated and scared” all of these years.
Troxler threatens to go to the police. While Ciara listens in from the bedroom, Troxler reveals he still has the letter Oliver wrote to Shane in prison, confessing to killing Paul when they were teens. Oliver isn’t budging, however, prompting Troxler to try and extort him for millions of dollars. Just as Troxler angrily rants about Oliver’s “unearned life of freedom,” Ciara comes in and hits him in the back of the head, causing him to seize and bleed out on the floor until he dies.
In the present day, Lee and Karl learn in the autopsy report the body’s been identified: Daniel Troxler, a shrink from Narraganset who lost his license two years for paying a nurse to mule stolen propophyl across state lines (probably for Oliver), meaning he’s been practicing as Oliver’s shrink without a license.
Their boss stops by their office and asks to speak with them later. Lee and Karl share a candid moment together where he asks her to help him understand why she would get involved with a man like Linus. “[You’re] sick of being you,” he said, which seems to sum it up for Lee.
Karl reveals he has one last ace up his sleeve: He stole Linus’ gold chain necklace, just in case he might need it later.
Back on day 34, Oliver and Ciara are wondering what to do with Troxler’s body.
Megan gets in touch with her sister Shyla who knows exactly what to do with a dead body. Shyla explains that, five years ago, a man named Andrew Delaney ripped off lobster traps in the bay and his body was found days later in a bathtub where it was “dissolved” down “to the fucking bone” using cleaning products. Shyla explained exactly how the killers bought themselves time and got away without being caught. Oliver watches on as Megan shares one last emotional phone call with her sister before they begin to pack their go-bag.
He finally gives her the code to the safe and asks her to empty it as he books a private jet “to get away for a while.” He then recommends that she takes the luggage full of his cash and important documents with her to go say goodbye to her sister one last time, much to her shock. But she agrees.
In the present day, Karl is sitting with Kevin the property manager to comb through the security footage for the day Troxler arrived at Oliver’s apartment. Kevin and Karl share a hilarious moment together before Kevin reveals he does know who Linus the drug dealer is and could possibly find him on the security footage, as per Karl’s request, for the right price.
On day 34, Ciara meets with Shyla one last time and explains Oliver tried to take responsibility for Paul’s death but Troxler kept him from doing it. Shyla seems to understand, and Megan admits that learning to forgive Oliver has helped her deal with the grief for her brother’s death. Shyla tells Megan that their mother would ultimately understand. “The last thing anyone wants is for you to go to prison like Shane,” Shyla tells her. The sisters end things on a good note.
Meanwhile, Oliver goes to meet Elliot, who is clearly still grieving his late wife, Allison, who was tragically hit by a truck. Oliver thanks Elliot for taking care of him for all of these years. But he admits that Allison may have been right to be suspicious of him, prompting Elliot to ask him what is going on.
Back in the present, Karl sneaks into the evidence room while Lee admits to their boss that she’s been hooking up with Linus and accepting presents from him. Fortunately for her, their boss promises to try and keep internal affairs off her back. She also asks Lee to convince Karl to stay on the force, but in return, Lee asks for her and Karl to be removed from the case because she has “a connection to one of the suspects,” insinuating Linus now happens to be a suspect.
Lee goes to see Karl at home. The detectives rejoice over the fact that their boss passed the investigation over to their “lazy” colleague who doesn’t like to ask a lot of questions. Now that they’re off the case, Lee and Karl freely speculate who killed Troxler: Megan or Oliver? But their discussion inspires Lee to ask Karl once and for all what is he going to do: Stay in the force as her partner, or quit? The detectives share a sweet moment when Karl reveals he’s not going anywhere.
Back on day 34, Oliver has Elliot drive him to the police station to turn himself in, saying he wants to do the right thing for Ciara. Just as he enters the police station, across Boston, Ciara is waiting for Oliver at the hangar when an employee notifies her it’s almost time for takeoff. Ciara finds out they will be going to Reykjavik.
She begins to get nervous he won’t be joining her. But Oliver finally appears, much to Ciara’s relief. He decided against turning himself in, after all. He revealed he chose Reykjavik because he has access to a five-star compound on a thermal spring with a Michelin-starred chef on staff. But Ciara admits it “sounds like hell” and suggests something different.
Back at the Martin residence, Ciara’s mother receives a letter from her explaining why she decided to forgive Oliver, along with a check for $2 million, leaving her mother in shock. At the same time, Karl and Lee’s colleague rifles through the evidence for the case and finds Linus’ chain, tying him to the dead body in Oliver’s bathtub.
“Some people are just meant to be together, even in the worst of circumstances,” Ciara explains in a voiceover of her letter to her mother, just as Karl and Lee walk into a new crime scene together.
And Ciara and Oliver got their own happily ever after. The series ends as the happy couple is seen on a tropical island somewhere as a storm is rolling in. Ciara collects their baby son, Shane, as they pack their things to leave.
“I can’t wait to see what will happen tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that,” she says as she shares a kiss with Oliver.
