Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) are cutting employee reliance on Anthropic's Claude Code, signaling a push by both technology companies to make greater use of their own artificial intelligence systems, according to a Tuesday report.
Meta has reduced the number of employees using Claude Code to about 30,000 from 60,000 earlier this year. Even with fewer users, Meta spent more than $105 million on the service during a recent 28-day period, according to the report.

Microsoft has taken a similar route, with spending on Anthropic's AI products down about one-third. The company began reducing Claude Code use in May while directing workers toward internally developed models and software.
Meta is also developing alternatives, including Muse Code for external customers and MetaCode for internal work. Microsoft has likewise been trying to limit employee token usage and shift workloads to its own AI tools.
The changes come as Anthropic expands its business with major technology customers. In its recent IPO filing, the company said two customers together generated about 25% of revenue, highlighting its growing reliance on large enterprise relationships.
