Sheryl Underwood earned all the laughs on Wednesday’s episode of The View while detailing what she’s looking for in a relationship.
The co-hosts weighed in on comedian Chelsea Handler‘s surprising meet-cute with her new boyfriend, “a stranger in a black cowboy hat” who she borrowed $1,000 from at a blackjack table in Las Vegas, and discussed whether it’s “refreshing to hear a story where people connect in real life instead of online.”
“Wake me up when you find the answer,” Whoopi Goldberg quipped.
Joy Behar insisted that it’s all about “location, location, location,” ultimately teasing that “if you want to meet me, you go to a yard sale or a sample sale.”
Underwood shared that she is a widow, and is “looking for love.” According to Essence, Underwood’s husband died by suicide in 1990.
However, the guest co-host and comedian won over the Hot Topics Table on Wednesday with the explanation of her ideal relationship.
“I’ve been a widow for a few decades, and I’m looking for a man who’s willing to be in a monogamous relationship with me while he lives in his own separate house,” she said.
Sunny Hostin exclaimed, “That’s what Whoopi always says!”
Goldberg clarified, “But I’m not looking.”
“I loved being married. I wanted to be a road comic who would come home and my kids would jump on me, and then my husband would jump on me,” she teased. “I wanted that life, and I love the life I have. But some men see the [strength] of being a female comic, but they don’t understand I want to be your wife. I want to pick up dry cleaning.”
Sara Haines said, “I love funny people. I’ll be your wife.”
Goldberg chimed in, “She’s not kidding.”
Underwood noted that she wants to assume the role of a wife and “love[s] monogamy,” but “do[es]n’t like living with a man.”
“I like monogamy and I want to be with one man,” she continued. “And age doesn’t bother me, and race doesn’t bother me.”
Hostin asked Underwood how she will be able to “find a man” without living in the same house as him.
Underwood replied, “We can get together. The house could be next door, Sunny.”
The guest co-host also said that she has become accustomed to living alone, and “like[s her’ space.”
“Here’s what kills me. It’s a dude all up on you. It’s like do what we gonna do, and get the hell out,” she joked. “I don’t want to be sitting in front of you.”
“So it’s not a marriage, though,” Hostin replied. “You don’t want a marriage.”
Underwood insisted that she does “want a marriage,” and offered up further explanation.
“Because I don’t want to sin. What if I met the guy, we sin, God comes back tomorrow? Now I’ve messed up my walk with Christ,” she quipped.
While Underwood continued her explanation, adding that she wants a man with a career, Goldberg and Haines bust into laughter along with the studio audience,.
“The visual of God coming back and saying, ‘Hey Sheryl, aww man! Yeah, damn! Damn, I’m so sorry. This ain’t gonna work for me, but you know what? Blessings on you. I’ll see you next rapture,'” Goldberg quipped.
