The competitor, who has not been publicly named, “immediately stepped in to help” after John Meise, 36, collapsed less than 600 feet from the finish line of the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon on Sunday morning, Meise’s family revealed in a fundraiser created to support his family.

Meise, who had no known medical history, was rushed to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa where he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
