Michael Douglas details ‘heartbreaking’ Rob Reiner talks over troubled sons before director’s murder

Make Page Six a Preferred Source Michael Douglas and Rob Reiner helped each other through serious family troubles.

In his new memoir, “One Helluva Ride,” Douglas, 82, recalls confiding in Reiner about the challenges they faced as fathers to sons struggling with drug issues, according to an excerpt published Monday by the Los Angeles Times.

Michael’s son, Cameron Douglas, 47, battled addiction and served seven years in federal prison on drug-related charges.

“We both had sons with serious drug issues and we both, at times, had been at the end of our rope,” Douglas writes.

In the book, the “Wall Street” star says the conversations were painful, but ultimately helped them find solace as they navigated difficult periods in their families.

“It was a heartbreaking confessional for us,” he wrote, adding that he knew they “gave each other some measure of comfort during the hard times.”

Douglas and Reiner also crossed paths professionally over the years, with Reiner directing Douglas in the 1994 romantic comedy “The American President.”

Douglas previously spoke about his friendship with Reiner and their discussions about their sons during a CBS News special following the director’s death.

Their conversations took on a tragic significance after Rob and his wife, Michele Reiner, were found dead inside their Brentwood home on Dec. 14, 2025.

Los Angeles police determined the couple had been victims of homicide, and their son, Nick Reiner, was arrested later that day.

Prosecutors allege Nick fatally stabbed his parents before fleeing the home. He was later indicted on two counts of murder with special-circumstance allegations of multiple murders and lying in wait.

The revelation comes as Douglas prepares to release the nearly 500-page memoir, which chronicles his Hollywood career, family life and some of his most personal experiences.

The memoir also includes Douglas’ admission that he had a hidden daliance: He admitted to having a secret relationship with his “Romancing the Stone” co-star Kathleen Turner while filming the 1984 movie.

The two had previously denied the relationship, which remained secret for decades.

“One Helluva Ride” is set to hit shelves on Tuesday.
