The cost of calling it quits: New York ranks in the top 5 most expensive states for divorce — NJ’s barely better, new study

Make New York Post a Preferred Source From walking down the aisle to asking for a divorce and having to file, the highs and lows of Big Apple love aren’t cheap.

New York, where a dream wedding costs over $53,000, is the second-most expensive state for divorce, running soured sweethearts more than $27,000 to officially part ways, according to nightmarish new data.

“The cost of divorce can be spread into various parts, [including court] fees, legal representation, and, where applicable, settlements and alimony,” study authors for Self Financial, a fintech imprint, explained in the report.

“The average divorce in the U.S. costs $10,080,” the experts continued, “with the cost increasing by an average of 37.17% ($3,747) when children are involved.”

Researchers analyzed statistics and figures from a selection of sources, including Center for Disease Control and Prevention findings, to determine the price of calling quits, countrywide.

The heartbreaking, bank-breaking revelations come amid a wave of big-ticket breakups.

From Lululemon magnate Chip Wilson’s $6.1 billion rupture with his wife of 20 years, to former Homeland Security secretary Kristi Noem’s recent filing after learning her crossdressing husband, Bryon, allegedly spent over $50,000 on sex workers, extraordinary divorces are on the rise.

But VIPs aren’t the only ones saying R.I.P. to their “‘Til death do us part” vows en masse.

Everyday couples from coast-to-coast — namely spouses who don’t share the same last name, and “graying” pairs over age 50 — are eagerly throwing in the towel on forever, exchanging their “I Do’s” for “I Don’ts” despite the steep dues, per the analysis.

“California is the most expensive state for divorce, costing an average of $14,656 per person, but rising to as much as $20,104 per person when children are involved,” warned investigators, crowning The Golden State No. 1 in the ranking.

Both parties in a California split pay a combined average of $29,313.

New Yorkers who’ve fallen out of love shell out a staggering $27, 943, in total, while Texans ready to fold ‘em pay a joint $25,875.

Connecticut and New Jersey round out the top five roster of most expensive states for divorce, costing residents $24,928 and $24,813, respectively.

Montana and New Mexico reign as the top two cheapest states for pulling the plug on one’s nuptials, with fees and charges amounting to less than $14,000 in each locale.

“Beyond the emotional impact, divorce can carry substantial financial consequences,” the insiders cautioned, urging husbands and wives to closely examine their bills, debts and obligations before making a fast break.

“For many couples, the end of a marriage also means thousands of dollars in legal fees and settlements leaving individuals to rebuild their personal finances, manage credit obligations and navigate the costs of starting a new chapter in life.”
