Hurricane Nolo strengthens in the Pacific Ocean after Polo battered West Coast

Make California Post a Preferred Source Another hurricane has exploded in the Pacific Ocean days after Hurricane Polo wreaked havoc across Mexico and Southern California.

Hurricane Nolo strengthened into a Cat-3 monster overnight and is projected to strengthen over the next 24–36 hours, peaking around Oct 5–6 as a Cat-4 storm with sustained winds reaching 132 mph and gusts up to 161 mph, according to Sunday morning advisory by the National Hurricane Center.

It is moving west across the Pacific, crossing the International Date Line into the Western Pacific over the next 12 hours, well away from the main Hawaiian Islands.

“Nolo is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Additional strengthening is forecast over the next day or so, before a weakening trend begins around the middle part of the week,” the Miami-based center said.

By Oct 7–9, the storm is forecast to steadily weaken, dropping back down to tropical storm strength (winds under 60 mph).

“Large swell associated with Nolo will continue to affect the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument over the next few days.

“The surf will likely inundate some of the low-lying atolls from Maro Reef to Lisianski Island,” the hurricane center said.

Hurricane Nolo swept past the Hawaiian Islands on Saturday. While the hurricane watch was canceled, officials warned of lingering threats including flash flooding, high winds, and hazardous surf — particularly in areas still recovering from earlier storms.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Rachel drifted off Mexico’s western coast on Friday and is expected to track westward away from land, maintaining hurricane strength into early next week.
