California highway renamed for Hollywood icon who died in fiery crash

Make California Post a Preferred Source A portion of a major California highway has been renamed after Hollywood icon James Dean 71 years after he died in a fiery crash on the road while driving to a race in Salinas.

Caltrans officials were joined by representatives of the late star in the town of Cholame on Wednesday where a segment of Highway 46—which connects the coast with the Central Valley—officially became the James Dean Memorial Highway.

“Yesterday’s ceremony marked 71 years since Dean’s tragic crash, and local leaders, CHP, and community advocates came together with one message: safer roads save lives,” the announcement read, referring to the designation near the site of Dean’s fatal 1955 crash.

“This designation is both a tribute and a call to action—highlighting ongoing safety improvements and the continued need for vigilance, engineering upgrades, and education to prevent future tragedies.”

Images from the ribbon cutting ceremony showed the new highway sign bearing Dean’s name, along with members of Dean’s family and local elected officials celebrating the honor.

The Hollywood legend was killed on Sept. 30, 1955, near where Highway 41 and Highway 46 now intersect.

He was driving his Porsche 550 Spyder with German Porsche mechanic Rolf Wutherich on the way to a race in Salinas.

The California Highway Patrol said 23-year-old Donald Turnupseed from Tulare was making a left turn onto Highway 41 when he and Dean crossed paths, News Nation reported.

Authorities said the star swerved in an attempt to avoid Turnupseed’s Ford Tudor but collided nearly head-on with the vehicle around 5:45 p.m.

Dean was taken to a local hospital where he died at the age of 24.

A memorial was set up near the crash site in the town of Cholame in the 1970s where mourners have come for decades to pay their respects. It was created by Japanese businessman Seita Ohnishi who was a fan of the late star.

The James Dean Memorial and Crash Site on Highway 46 is made of concrete and steel. It consists of a metal structure around a tree marking 900 yards away from where the crash occured.

There is also a plaque — refurbished in 2025 — that reads, in part, “James Dean’s influence remains indelible, transcending time. He symbolizes rebellion, talent, and the fleeting nature of life.”

The mysterious heartthrob is best known for three films he made — “East of Eden” and “Rebel Without a Cause,” both released in 1955, and 1956’s “Giant” — before he died.
