CloseTwo attempts to execute Tennessee's only woman on death row - convicted murderer Christa Pike - by lethal injection failed on Wednesday.
Pike, whose attempted execution had already been the subject of a high-profile legal battle, was in hospital and being given "life-saving measures" as of Thursday morning.
Tennessee's Governor Bill Lee has now said that executions in the state have been halted for the rest of the year. He has also ordered a third-party review to "determine exactly what occurred".
