Padres make insane MLB history in sweep over Cubs in wild-card

Make California Post a Preferred Source The Padres swept the Cubs in the wild-card series and made history while doing so. They defeated Chicago 4-1 on Wednesday night to complete the sweep and advance.

In doing so, San Diego became the first team in MLB history to hold the highest-scoring team in the majors during the regular season to just one run (or none) in a multi-game postseason series, according to OptaSTATS.

The Cubs lineup mustered just a single run throughout the series, with likely NL MVP Pete Crow-Armstrong and Alex Bregman going a combined 0-for-15. The previous low for runs scored by the regular-season scoring leader in a multi-game postseason series was three (the Orioles held the White Sox to three runs in the 1983 ALCS).

The Padres pitching staff was dominant against Chicago, tossing 18 innings of one-run baseball across two games with a 0.50 ERA, 0.83 WHIP, eight hits allowed and 19 strikeouts.

The red hot Padres squad spent Wednesday night celebrating in the clubhouse with new owners, Kwanza Jones and Jose E. Feliciano. But it’s back to business for the Padres as they have a date with the Brewers in Milwaukee.

The NL Division Series between the Padres and Brewers kicks off Saturday at American Family Field. While San Diego has continued its hot streak into October, the Brewers ended with season going 15-3 and finished the year with the best record in the league.
