Make California Post a Preferred Source The estranged wife of the slain New York Times tech executive surfaced with their three children only hours after her parents were charged with murder.
Candice Jang took her 3, 5 and 7-year-old kids on a walk Wednesday outside the home she and her estranged husband, Jonathan McKinsey, used to share.
McKinsey moved out of the house several months ago as the couple battled it out in court over child custody in their divorce. The two got married in 2011 but McKinsey filed for divorce last year.
Jang’s parents, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, appeared in a Dublin, California courtroom Wednesday where they were arraigned on a slew of felony charges, including murder with a special circumstance of “lying in wait.”
Chen broke her silence as she and her husband appeared together behind glass. Chen wore a green top and blue medical-style mask. Zhang sat to her left in yellow jail garb.
Asked whether she wanted a public defender or private lawyer, Chen told the court through a male Mandarin interpreter: “I do not have the financial means.”
Zhang didn’t speak during the brief hearing and waived his formal arraignment. Public defender Jenny Otis represented him Wednesday. No pleas were entered, and neither defendant was granted bail.

The 77-year-old parents allegedly took turns firing bullets into McKinsey in the parking lot of the Dublin Sports Grounds on Saturday before leaving the scene in a Honda Civic.
Police quickly arrested the two with the help of witnesses.
It’s unclear why the two allegedly decided to kill McKinsey, but the family had a rough history.
The New York Times executive allegedly hit their six-year-old son in the face with an open hand last year, and Jang called the police to report the incident. McKinsey was charged with two counts of misdemeanor child abuse for the incident, but was ultimately released from jail on the condition that he take parenting classes.

Chen visited the family in 2023 and began allegedly berating the couple’s young son for wearing dresses, calling the young child a “disgusting queer” and a “pervert.” Chen also allegedly hit McKinsey’s young son in the back of the head when he asked about wearing dresses.
When McKinsey begged her to stop, Chen turned her ire to the New York Times employee, who was transgender and transitioned from female to male in 2010, according to the documents.
Chen then allegedly called McKinsey the same degrading names, according to the restraining order.
