Schlittler, who closed out Boston in Game 3 of last year’s wild-card round with a 12-strikeout performance, followed it up with a nearly as impressive second act by whiffing 10 in this year’s series opener. He went 6 1/3, as manager Aaron Boone let Schlittler go to 117 pitches.
Rice drove in six runs — hitting a grand slam in the eighth after a solo homer in the fifth along with an RBI single in the seventh — as he went 4-for-5.
