CloseA renowned painting by British landscape artist William Turner has returned to the city that inspired it nearly two centuries ago.
Rome, from Mount Aventine features a panoramic view of the Italian capital and will be on display at the Palazzo Rondinini for three days.
Dating back to the 19th century, the masterpiece was based on sketches made in Rome.
The work of art is remarkably well preserved and is believed to have never been restored. It even features traces of fingerprints and brush hairs are still visible.
The painting has only been to auction once before, selling for more than £30 million.
Sotheby's now expects it could fetch around £50 million when it goes under the hammer in London this December.
The BBC's Southern and Eastern Europe correspondent, Sarah Rainsford, had a close-up look at the painting in Rome.
