Make New York Post a Preferred Source A delivery woman was killed when a dump truck plowed into her e-bike and then drove off in Herald Square on Monday, according to cops and an advocacy group.
The truck driver collided with the 50-year-old cyclist around 10:50 a.m., as both headed west on West 34th Street, approaching Seventh Avenue – in front of the Primark store and just down the block from the iconic Macy’s flagship location, police said.
The motorist kept driving, heading west on West 34th Street, authorities said.
The woman — who was riding a JOCO rental e-bike and making a delivery — was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police and the Transportation Alternatives advocacy organization.
A witness who asked not to be identified told AM NY the bloody scene drew a crowd of onlookers on the busy street.
“The truck came, and the bike was here, and the truck served and hit them,” the witness said. “I was across the street. I was down. I was walking, and I saw it, and that’s when everybody started running out, crowding and stuff.”
The NYPD confirmed hours later that the driver was subsequently found and questioned, but did not face any charges by the late afternoon.
“We’re horrified and heartbroken that another bike rider is dead,” Transportation Alternatives said in a statement. “This is the 20th bike rider killed on our streets this year — the 20th New Yorker whose community is now grieving a sudden and preventable loss.
“In just two days, the City Council will hold a hearing on e-bikes,” the advocates added. “During such a deadly year, it would make sense to hold a hearing on bikes and bike safety — but we must be clear about the risks and the dangers. Seventeen New Yorkers on e-bikes have been killed on our streets so far this year, and our city’s leaders should be doing everything in their power to ensure safety on our streets.”
The deadly hit-and-run came a week after 68-year-old pedestrian Ismael Rodriguez, of the Bronx, was struck and killed by a motorist who may have been behind the wheel of a Lamborghini, police said.
Earlier this month, Thomas Bakas, 77, was also fatally thrown off his e-scooter in a head-on, broad-daylight collision with a bicyclist outside a Hilton hotel in Downtown Brooklyn, police said.
