The actress made a surprise appearance during Sunday night’s VMAs 2026 broadcast to present the show’s first-ever Artist Director Honors to friend Taylor Swift — and help premiere the “Patient Zero” music video, in which she stars opposite Colin Farrell.
While the casting was first teased on Thursday, eagle-eyed fans found clues in Johnson’s jewelry for her “Verity” red carpet appearance on the same day, which could have been Easter eggs for Swift’s video.
For the Colleen Hoover adaptation’s London premiere, Johnson paired her sheer lace Colleen Allen gown and Fleur du Mal lingerie with a suite of jewelry designed by Cece Fein-Hughes of Cece Jewellery.
The “Fifty Shades of Grey” actress wore the Devil Is In The Details bracelet, He Loves Me diamond ring, Sweetheart necklace and Apple Of My Eye ring — style names that, once you’ve seen Swift’s new video, seem pointed in hindsight.
In “Patient Zero,” Johnson plays the wife of a manipulative womanizer (portrayed by Farrell), while Swift stars as the man’s similarly tortured ex. The pair wear matching outfits throughout the video, symbolizing Farrell’s character’s pattern of mistreating the women in his life.
“I know he charmed your family and friends / And you thought it’s ’cause he loves you / But it’s ’cause he loves how everybody else loves him,” Swift sings.
“I know it seems like he shines so bright / But he’s bathing in your reflected light / On a free solo social climb.”
The Grammy winner told Capital FM that “Patient Zero” was inspired by an experience she had with one of her friends.
“One of my friends told us that she had been reached out to by the new girlfriend of an ex of hers, asking for guidance on if she had had the same experiences with this guy that this new girlfriend was having,” she said.
“It’s such an interesting kind of angle on humanity and on relationships.”
