Make California Post a Preferred Source A viral video showing a mom at a San Francisco Giants game juggling a baby and an armful of food has sparked backlash against her partner for not helping her carry the load.
The seemingly simple moment sparked outrage online, and now the wife is explaining in a Substack post what really happened.
“We initially thought the broadcast was funny,” Erika, the wife, said, referring to the video that showed her carrying food back to their seats with a baby strapped to her chest while her husband sat watching the game.
The clip of the game’s NBC Sports Bay Area broadcast also featured iconic Giants announcers Kruk and Kuip zooming in on the couple and creating a playful narrative about what was happening, dubbing Erika “mom of the year.”
“If there’s ever a true definition of a multitasking mother, that is the deal right there,” Krukow said.
Erika said she started receiving a lot of calls after the video, which now has more than 43.9 million views.
“Friends and family started calling and texting us immediately. We laughed at the narration because anyone who knows our family knows how ridiculous it is to suggest that Ramses never helps with our kids,” she wrote on Substack. “But as the clip spread, people on the internet treated the announcers’ imaginary narration as evidence of our unequal relationship.”
Erika said she soon began receiving angry messages about the video, with people insulting Ramses and even suggesting that she should leave him.
She explained that she had gone to the bathroom and, on her way back, offered to grab food for her husband because she was already passing by a food stand.
Ramses offered to take the baby, Erika said, but she told him she wanted to keep her. She added that Ramses offered to split the sandwich she had gotten him, but she told him to enjoy it.
“There was no argument about ketchup. He didn’t tell me I forgot anything,” she said.
Erika also explained why the Giants baseball game was particularly important to her husband: It was a way for him to honor a friend who had recently died.
“My husband will never admit it, but I know he’s been grieving him deeply,” she said. “That evening, I chose to take care of him. A camera catching me doing something for my husband doesn’t show all the times he has done something for me.”
Erika also described the darker side of going viral, particularly the impact that strangers’ comments about her husband could have on their family.
“To the people who insulted Ramses, please remember that our children may someday read your words or watch your videos,” she wrote. “I don’t want them to search for this memory and find strangers calling their dad a deadbeat.”
She added that some people had found the family’s personal information online, including names and phone numbers, and had issued death threats.
“Some of you have told my husband to kill himself,” she said. “To anyone who has done that: shame on you. My husband is a father, a son, and a person deeply loved by people who know who he truly is. Our children need their dad. I hope and pray you reflect on what you have written.”
Erika also spoke directly to broadcasters Kruk and Kuip.
“I believe you meant no harm. But your jokes helped turn a moment of love and support into something strangers used to ridicule my husband and judge our marriage,” she wrote. “What was a few moments of amusement on your broadcast became days of real pain for our family. I wish you had known what that night meant to him before making him the punchline.”
