Make California Post a Preferred Source Starbucks is getting ready to shut down dozens of California coffee shops, with 64 locations across the state apparently headed for the chopping block.
The closures stretch from Santa Rosa to San Diego, hitting the Bay Area, Sacramento, the Central Coast, Los Angeles, Orange County, the Inland Empire and beyond.
News outlets cross-checked a sampling of the California locations using the Starbucks app and the company’s store locator to find locations that didn’t have operating hours scheduled beyond this week.
The list of 64 California locations comes from Starbucks superfan and data tracker Winter, who has spent decades trying to visit every company-operated Starbucks in the world, according SFGate. He also used the app to compile the list.
Starbucks has not confirmed the California locations individually.The 64 reported California store closures represent 2.1% of the state’s locations, and it is unknown if any employees will be laid off since Starbucks plans to transfer workers to nearby stores.
“Coffeehouses that are closing will have signage up this weekend to notify customers,” Starbucks told SFGate.

The California closures are part of Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol’s “Back to Starbucks” strategy, which debuted in 2024.
In a letter to employees, Chief Operating Officer Mike Grams said Starbucks had identified locations where the company did not believe it could consistently deliver the experience it wanted for customers and partners or where it did not see a path to acceptable financial performance.
Starbucks plans to close 250 stores across the US and Canada in the coming days. The cuts represent roughly 1% of the company’s North American footprint.
The company is also taking a $300 million restructuring charge and launching a $1 billion restructuring and renovation effort. Starbucks is on track to retrofit and “uplift” 1,500 existing North American coffeehouses by Sept. 30.
