Make Page Six a Preferred Source Ryan Murphy has a favorite “American Horror Story” season — and it may horrify fans.
“My favorite season is the season which everybody hates, which is ‘Roanoke,'” the iconic TV writer told Page Six exclusively at the premiere of “American Horror Story: 13” earlier this week.
“That is my favorite season; it’s my favorite form,” he gushed. “I loved making it because it was playing with form.”
“‘Roanoke’ started off being everyone’s most hated season, but now it’s kind of getting up there,” he explained, referring to the social media commentary about the different seasons.
“And a lot of people are discovering it and it’s become a lot of people’s favorite, so I’m like, ‘Justice for ‘Roanoke!'”
However, some of Murphy’s cast can’t say the same.
“AHS” staple Sarah Paulson told “Entertainment Tonight” that she can’t stand “Roanoke,” noting that “people get mad at her” when she says it.
“I don’t care,” the actress exclaimed on the red carpet. “Bite me! Bite me hard! I don’t give a s–t, sorry!”
“Roanoke” was the sixth season and was presented as a fake paranormal documentary called “My Roanoke Nightmare.” It followed a couple who moved from Los Angeles to a secluded — and haunted — farmhouse in North Carolina.

During our conversation, Murphy confessed he never thought the show would reach its thirteenth season and theorized about its success.
“I think it is a very othered show,” the TV mogul opined. “It started off with that, a show about outsiders, as a lot of my work is. They were about people who were overlooked and marginalized and unseen, and I’ve always done that in my work, but I also think there is a very queer sensibility to this show, always.
He explained that he believes “a lot of queer people love horror because they relate to the idea of others and the idea of revenge, justice, which this show has a lot of.”
“But also not just queer people; I think it’s a very feminine show,” he clarified. “I think there’s always a lot of strong women characters … I never thought it would last this long, in a million years, never ever.”
Murphy was joined on the red carpet by Paulson, Jessica Lange, Angela Bassett, Billie Lourd, Paul Anthony Kelly and Gabourey Sidibe.
New episodes of “American Horror Story” Season 13 air every Thursday at 9 p.m. ET on FX and stream on Hulu the next day.
