Getty Images Contrary to popular opinion, the free agent market doesn’t consist of only one player. Yes, superstar starter Tarik Skubal will grab headlines since there’s nobody close. But while it may be seen as a one-man show, there are some other decent starters and useful position players. Here’s our top 30.
1. Skubal: MLB’s consensus top pitcher will almost surely beat Gerrit Cole’s $325M pitching record, which makes the Mets and incumbent Dodgers early favorites. He’s maintained his stuff following arthroscopic elbow surgery (“Skubal scope”) with a 2.95 L.A. ERA. It’ll be interesting if MLB’s salary cap desire affects things.
2. Bo Bichette,* INF: It’s certainly no guarantee he’ll opt out of $84M over two years (minus the unique $5M bonus for opting out) after an unremarkable year in Queens and yet another opt-out chance. But it’s a weaker free agent field, and the Phillies reportedly offered $200M over seven years last winter. They should have infield openings with Luis Arraez and Alec Bohm also free agents.
3. Randy Arozarena, OF: He timed his career year well, joining AL MVP Yordan Alvarez as the only players to post a 125 wRC+ every month, via MLB Network. Seattle needs Arozarena, whose clutch gene surfaced in the 2020 postseason.
